After reporting a record net income of US$250 million for the first half of 2023, Philippine Airlines (PAL) has announced plans to significantly invest in expanding its fleet and improving services.

The airline’s H1 2023 net income, reflecting a massive jump from last year, has prompted this bold move.

In a significant expansion strategy, PAL intends to purchase nine Airbus A350-1000 long-range jetliners, with an aggregate value surpassing US$3.2 billion.

Alongside fleet expansion, the airline is intensifying its focus on customer experience by adding more customer service representatives, and introducing a new customer relations management system later this year. This will facilitate more tailored self-service options for its passengers.

Capt. Stanley K. Ng, PAL President and COO, commented on the airline’s growth trajectory: “These encouraging financial results empower us to create a more robust and agile Philippine Airlines. We remain unwavering in our dedication to enrich the travel experiences of our esteemed clientele.”

Lucio C. Tan III, President & COO of PAL Holdings, Inc., further emphasized the airline’s successful recovery. He mentioned the sacrifices and adjustments the company made in recent years, positioning PAL for significant product and digital transformations.

Financial highlights for PAL in Q2 2023 include:

  • A 27% revenue increase, reaching US$820 million.
  • Operating income surging by 95% to US$179 million.
  • A net income of US$141 million, a near triple from last year’s Q2.

PAL’s H1 2023 achievements consist of:

  • Serving 7 million passengers, marking an 89% increase from H1 2022.
  • Operation of over 50,400 flights.
  • An 81.6% average passenger load factor.
  • A significant boost in passenger revenues to US$1.4 billion.

However, there was a 54% drop in cargo revenue as PAL shifted its focus to accommodating rising passenger demands.

PAL continues its expansion by re-establishing various routes to mainland China and launching new services, including nonstop flights to Perth and routes from Clark to tourist hotspots like Caticlan and Boracay.
